2022
Aḥmad Bašīr al-'Ayla is one of the most prolific and versatile author of Contemporary Palestinian literary landscape. Although he is probably best known for his long poetic career, he is also a journalist, a novelist, a script editor, a radio producer and a short story writer. In 2016 he published his first collection of short stories entitled Al-ḥabl allaḏī tadallā min al-samā’ (The rope hanging from the sky). The stories included in this work are mainly set in Bengazi, which is the city where the author lives since he was a child, and they focus on the tragedy of war and its disasters, first of all the loss and distruction of houses and buildings. In such a tragic context the concept of “…

The Concept of Exception: from Politics to Spatial Domain
2014
During the last decade, the concept of the state of exception has branched out from the field of politics into other fields, including planning. Since planning is inseparable from politics and because planning laws are largely influenced by the nature of each political regime. The Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben was inspired by the German philosopher Carl Schmitt and consequently developed a theory of the state of exception. Schmitt pointed out that the context of exception is declared by a sovereign power and he tied this concept with dictatorship. Agamben, however, argues that the state of exception is not a special kind of law, but it is a zone of anomie, where all legal determinatio…
Manipulation of landscape as an Exercise of Unfair Power: the Case of Qalqiliya in the Occupied Palestine
Planning, as emphasized by planning theories, is supposed to contribute to the progress of mankind through always developing policies, regulations, methods, and concepts, to support the welfare of individuals and their communities. Therefore, themes such as ethic of planning and the issue of just city have been discussed intensively in planning theories and the main dominated question is: what is the good planning? Many planning theorists answer this question by addressing various types of planning such as collaborative, deliberative, radical planning and so on as good tools to achieve progress and prosperity. However, Palestine is a case where the contradiction between theory and practice …
Reviving earthen architecture in Palestine: The added significances of the building sustainability and an opportunity for the future
2016
Several attempts have emerged recently in Palestine aiming to find an economical-environmental alternative building material beside the widely-used natural stone as a main building material, due to some factors related to the cost and the negative effects of stone mining areas on the local environment. Similar attempts had a certain response to the peculiar social needs and economic situation there. The efforts led to revive earthen architecture on organizational and individual levels, producing a certain number of earthen buildings in the last few years. In order to evaluate the appropriateness of earth as an alternative raw material in Palestine, the paper outlines the general advantages …

Going back to the sources to preserve the Islamic history of Palestine. Jerusalem's archival heritage as a case study
2019
With regard to the presence of very important archives located in the heart of the most important city of Palestine (such as the maktaba al–masjid al–Aqsâ, the maktaba al–Budayriyya and the maktaba al– Uzbakiyya, to give an example), and in consideration of the recent events which have negatively involved both its social and cultural life, it seems to us that Jerusalem al–Quds can well represent an emblematic case study. To better highlight the necessity of going back to the sources in order to re–establish, and therefore to preserve, the Islamic history of Palestine, and to better define the significant role of Jerusalem’s archives, we consider it useful to precise both the historical and …

2018
To discuss about the importance of the Arab and Islamic heritage kept in Jerusalem (Palestine) means to highlight its relevance as a part of a specific Palestinian legacy, as well as an insuppressible part of the Palestinian culture as a whole. It mainly consists of manuscripts (letters, edicts and documents of various kinds) and ancient volumes stored in some historical archives and libraries, but it also consists of the very places where this documentation has been preserved. Through the history of such places (archives and libraries), in effect, it is also possible to reconstruct the history of important Palestinian families (ulema) which - accordingly to a specific Islamic conception - …
Gerusalemme e la Palestina nella rihla maqdisiyya dello shaykh Jamal al-Din al-Qasimi (1903)
2019
The rihla maqdisiyya, or the record of the visit to to the Palestinian regions, and especially to Jerusalem (al-Quds), represents a particular typology of Arabic travel accounts as compared to other documents of this genre. As a matter of fact, the rihla maqdisiyya reflects some peculiarities which mainly depend, other than the particular geographical position of the Palestinian region, on the religious as well as symbolic significance that this has assumed throughout history (just consider the relevant presence of holy places for the three major monotheisms in Jerusalem). The rihla of Jamal al-Din al-Qasimi at the beginning of the 20th century is very little known. Not only it is of great …
